Alonso Excited To Get Things Rolling
March 21, 2017 09:17 PM | Alain Poupart
Kiko Alonso's reaction to his new contract with the Dolphins was short and to the point.

"It means everything," Alonso told reporters in a conference call after signing a new four-year contract through the 2020 season.

Alonso was a restricted free agent before the new contract, but the Dolphins kept the right to match any offer he might receive when they gave him the highest tender allowable.

But all along, Alonso wanted to stay in South Florida after enjoying a bounce-back season in 2016.

"This is where I want to be and I'm just excited that it's official that I'm staying here," Alonso said. "I love the culture, I love my teammates. I know we're building something special here and I want to be a part of it."

Alonso was a big part of what the Dolphins accomplished in 2016 when they rebounded from a 1-4 start to finish 10-6 and earn a playoff berth.

Alonso led the Dolphins with 115 tackles and also had two interceptions and four fumble recoveries. His biggest play of the season gave the Dolphins a 31-24 victory against the Chargers when he had a late pick-six against Philip Rivers.

Part of the offseason trade that also brought Byron Maxwell over from the Philadelphia Eagles, Alonso started 15 games and showed the big-play ability he demonstrated as a rookie with the Buffalo Bills in 2013.

"At the end of the day I just play football and try to do my job to the best of my ability," Alonso said.

Alonso figures to once again lead the Dolphins linebacking corps, which made a big acquisition in free agency with the signing of longtime Pittsburgh Steelers starter Lawrence Timmons.

With Timmons' arrival, there's a possibility that Alonso could be asked to switch from middle to outside linebacker. Alonso said he'd be happy to line up wherever he's asked.

"At the end of the day, linebacker is linebacker," Alonso said. "You run and hit. I have not talked to (Timmons) yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to playing with him. He's definitely one of the guys that I admire the way he plays. The guy is a great player and I'm definitely looking forward to playing with him."

Alonso also is looking forward to starting a second season in the same defense, something he hasn't had the luxury of doing since he entered the NFL. He's also excited about the Dolphins bringing back many of their prominent free agents, namely Kenny Stills, Andre Branch and Jermon Bushrod.

"Those guys are great players," Alonso said. "It's definitely great to have them back. I'm excited. I'm exited to get going and get things rolling."
